Rest areas on roads

Sir, – My brother, who resides in the UK, has just finished a road trip of Ireland, North and South, towing a caravan. He reports a great trip, nice scenery, very pleasant, helpful people and nice caravan sites. However, there is one problem – there are few places on major roads to pull in and pause for a while, particularly when towing a caravan.

Anyone familiar with the major roads in the UK will know the laybys available.

Is this lack of laybys an official policy, as we cannot police them for litter, overnight parking, etc?

A recent campaign to take a rest from driving is an excellent idea, but the question is, where should motorists rest? – Yours, etc,
