Sir, – It appears some individuals have taken issue with my suggestion (Letters, April 4th) to reduce subject numbers and increase specialisation within the Leaving Cert, with some even suggesting we go in the opposite direction and adopt something more akin to the extremely broad European Baccalaureate.
I don’t see why one should preclude the other.
Those who choose the broader programme would continue to retain a broader range of college degree options, whereas those choosing the more specialised, and consequently rigorous, programme might be restricted to a narrower range of subject groups, but could opt for direct second-year entry into four-year college courses, assuming acceptable grades. – Yours, etc,
