Sir, – Perhaps some prerequisites for those opposing planning permission should include being a permanent resident in the area, having a smaller house than the one they are opposing, and having fewer houses than the prospective builder.
As it stands there is far too much potential for egregious hypocrisy, wherein those with mansions or multiple holiday homes can essentially object to a first-time builder building a modest house because they think it ruins the view.
If planning is to be restricted on environmental and aesthetic grounds, then surely the biggest culprits should be the first to be targeted.
