Phoenix Park traffic restrictions

Sir, – Having participated in the OPW's public consultation on the Phoenix Park, I was disappointed to learn via your article "Phoenix Park traffic restrictions to be scaled back" (News, July 27th) that many of the proposed restrictions on cars are to be deferred or abandoned.

Based on the recommendations in the report, one would assume that the public consultation resulted in strong public support for the park’s continued use as a commuter route. So you can imagine my surprise when I read that 72 per cent of respondents to the public consultation supported “reduction in commuter through traffic”, and that just 8 per cent of respondents “use the park as a commuter route”.

It makes me wonder what is the value of holding a public consultation if the results are not listened to? And what the report the OPW published was actually based on? – Yours, etc,
