Nurses in Nicu

Sir, – I respect Prof John Murphy ("Looking after the smallest of the small", October 26th) and I agree there have been a great many advances in treatments and technologies in the care of neonates and especially in our tertiary newborn intensive care units (Nicu).

There have also been advances in the types of nursing care given to these very small infants, but over all, the majority of these new technologies are administered to these babies by the frontline staff in our neonatal units – the excellent neonatal-trained nurses, without who (in my view) many of these infants would not have survived.

Almost every thing that an infant needing Nicu care, from birth to discharge, is attended to by the neonatal nurse.

So well done to all our Nicu nurses too! – Yours, etc,
