Sir, – I read that a Catholic priest has accused Leo Varadkar of "living in perverse contempt of the sacrament of Holy Matrimony" (News, March 22nd).
The accusation is a bit rich coming from someone who has vowed to avoid the sacrament of matrimony at all costs for his entire life.
Why don’t the bishops of the Catholic Church have a policy of immediately and publicly distancing themselves from statements such as this? Currently bishops only seem to take action on the rare occasion that a priest imparts serious heresy, but offensive comments directed at the private lives of individuals merit no sanction whatsoever. – Yours, etc,
