Sir, – Contrary to "Design Moments" (July 1st), the printed fabric Toile de Jouy did not originate in France.
Although the name is indeed associated with a town near Paris, the technique was invented in Ireland by Francis Nixon in 1752. The fabric was even produced here, before the technique migrated to England and thence to France. A familiar story perhaps, and not to be forgotten. – Yours, etc,
DENIS WEAIRE,
Dublin 6.
