Sir, – Loyalists in Northern Ireland celebrate their culture by lighting massive 40ft bonfires, complete with pallets, tyres and nationalist emblems, in residential areas. Local people have had to leave their homes, and the municipal councils have attempted to protect these houses from fire damage by boarding them up.
I wonder what connection there is between what right-thinking people would properly call thuggery, intimidation, vandalism, provocation, forced eviction and environmental pollution with the “celebration” of “culture”. – Yours, etc,
LORETTO BROWNE,
Ashbourne, Co Meath.
Sir, – In the spirit of the Dublin Fire Brigade fire engines and personnel assisting their Belfast counterparts during the second World War, perhaps they could head up again to help with any out-of-control loyalist bonfires. – Yours, etc,
PETER BROPHY,
Blackrock,
Co Dublin.
