Sir, – A livestock carrier will arrive in Ireland this week from Panama. In excess of 2,000 young cattle will then be loaded in Greenore and transported to Libya on a journey which takes 10 days by sea.
They will endure suffering en route and slaughter in Libya.
Beef prices in the EU are currently at an all-time high so why the need to inflict cruelty on live animals? What farmer, who claims to love his animals, knowingly sells them to this trade?
We need transparency around the conditions in which animals are bred, live, are transported and are slaughtered.
Despite killing more and more animals annually, world hunger is steadily rising so we need to change what we do, not keep doing it. Banning live export would be a start.
– Yours, etc,
JOAN BURGESS,
