Sir, – The Literacy Association of Ireland welcomes the positive results attained by Irish pupils in the 2016 PIRLS (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) assessment (News, December 5th). Ireland’s 10-year-olds were rated the best in Europe, with only Russia and Singapore achieving significantly higher scores worldwide. While causality is not easily attributed in this type of study, credit is due in this case to our teachers, parents/guardians and policymakers. Ní neart go cur le chéile. – Yours, etc,
Dr GENE MEHIGAN,
President,
Literacy Association
