Legislating for surrogacy

Sir, – Breda O’Brien (Opinion, March 9th) writes that “everybody sympathises with infertile couples”. Sympathy is not what the involuntary childless require, or indeed, in my experience desire.

Instead, appropriate legislation and access to regulated services would be considerably more welcome. Banning surrogacy, as Ms O’Brien suggests, will force people to continue to make their own arrangements. Legislation, taking all parties’ needs into consideration, is the only sensible way forward. – Yours, etc,
