Irish neutrality and the EU

Sir, – I would dearly love to know what some people would have us do if a fellow EU state were attacked by an outside force? By the sound of things, nothing is the answer. Ensconced safe and sound on an island in the Atlantic, it is easy bask in the virtuous glow of elevating neutrality to a fetish. People in the Baltic States, Poland, Romania and Greece don’t have that luxury. – Yours, etc,

PAUL WILLIAMS,

Sir, – Regarding Lorna Siggins's article "Can we rely on the EU to fight our corner in Brexit fish talks?" (Opinion & Analysis, July 5th), I have little doubt that the European Union can be relied upon to defend our corner when push comes to shove.

Perhaps more importantly, one might ask if Ireland will defend the EU’s corner if Putin comes to push? – Yours, etc,
