How best to tackle compo culture?

Sir, – Many in Ireland, myself included, will welcome Judge Michael Coghlan's criticism of the compensation culture in Ireland (Home News, April 12th). However his remarks that it "is high time people got the idea, if they had a bad experience [they can] expect money from a third party, has to stop" are hard to follow.

It is the judiciary that makes these awards. If judges refuse to approve these payouts, the number of claims will drop very quickly.

Whatever one thinks of these claimants, it is the judiciary, not the claimants themselves, who grant the awards and it is these awards that incentivise people to claim. – Yours, etc,

DONAL McGRATH,
