Sir, – As someone who spasmodically suspends rationality and invests small amounts in the National Lottery draws, I think the current practice of allowing the jackpot to accumulate to astronomical levels is indefensible.
For example, the jackpot on Wednesday had reached €15.5 million which nobody won. A total of 35 people succeeded in getting five numbers and got €1,280 each. Surely if a rule were introduced that no more than €5 million would be carried forward when a large jackpot is not won, it would benefit many more players.
For example, if such a rule had applied on Wednesday, 35 people would have won approximately €300,000 each, which would be life-transforming for many of them. – Yours, etc,
SEAMUS REYNOLDS,
