Sir, – I couldn't agree more with Nuala Martyn (Letters, March 26th) on the idea of leaving a corner of your garden grow wild to provide an oasis for wild plants and insects that are so important to nature. There is a tradition in Ireland for farmers to leave an awkward corner or an inaccessible area of a field untouched. This area was called a "hare's corner" as it was also an ideal home for these creatures. It's great to see that the Burrenbeo Trust in Co Clare now has a project under way to encourage farmers to revive this tradition. The size of the area does not matter. How simple it is to swing the lawnmower in an arc in the corner of your rectangular garden and thus provide your own little oasis for nature to flourish. I can't think of another garden feature that takes so little work to install and provides so much benefit. – Yours, etc,
NOEL SHANAGHY,
