Sir, – The recent Government decision to introduce physical education as a Leaving Certificate subject, albeit on a pilot basis in 50 schools, is to be welcomed.
The importance of sport to many people, combined with the growing popularity of third-level courses in this field has already amply demonstrated student interest in the subject.
This development in the curriculum is particularly welcome given the epidemics of obesity and diabetes facing the nation.
Now if we can just get teachers to stop saying “no running” in the school yards of national schools , perhaps we will be getting somewhere. – Yours, etc,
