General practice nurses

Sir, – GPs  look forward to participating fully in the delivery of coronavirus vaccination.We have had exceptional support and collaboration from the HSE throughout the pandemic. However, there is a large group of fellow workers who may be feeling left out. There are almost 2,000 general practice nurses in Ireland. In the early 1990s as few as 10 per cent of GPs worked with a nurse. Now it would be impossible to work without one.

These colleagues, male and female, deserve greater recognition for their essential role in our general practices.

They will be the staff ordering, quality controlling, mixing, administering and recording coronavirus immunisations over the coming months.
