Sir, – As a society, we are at a critical juncture. We have allowed unfettered capitalism to take control of our economy with the result that instead of the economic sector being the servant of our society, the opposite is true; this favours the rich, while the poor are neglected, forcing them to live on the margins.
Nowhere do we see this disconnect more so than in the area of housing and homelessness where the right to a decent home has been displaced by the absolute right to private property. A home has now become a luxury rather than a necessity of family life. This lack of respect and neglect by the political and economic systems for the human dignity of citizens has percolated down to the lowest depths of society where human life can be bought and sold as commodities and drugs. It’s opportune that we have an election at this crucial time in our history. The choice is now ours to create a new society where respect for the human rights of all becomes the paramount value in our communities. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Fianna Fáil appeals to the electorate on the basis that it has performed wonderfully well in opposition. It has put the national interest first in all policy areas, notably fiscal matters, housing, health and the Brexit issue.
Juxtaposing its belief in this with its calamitous performance during a 14-year tenure in office, it logically follows that in opposition it has finally happened upon its true métier in political life. A niche for that party in permanent opposition would appear to be very good for the country. – Yours, etc,
