Sir, – If Facebook is not in a position to manage unregulated advertising in the run-up to a referendum or election in a particular country, it needs to switch off all of its advertising in that country for the duration of the campaign. If the company is serious about protecting democracy, it can do nothing less. Facebook created the problem through carelessness and needs to address it both in the short and longer terms.
In the meantime, it should consider endowing a “Max Schrems Chair of Data Privacy and Protection” at an Irish university as a tangible demonstration of its commitment to change. – Yours, etc,
