Electric scooters

Sir, – While welcoming legislation to cover the use of electric scooters on Irish roads, the article "Lime to invest €10m in Irish operations as it readies e-scooter services" (Business, October 20th) is silent on how to deal with those who persist in flying along at high speed on pavements, often alongside designated cycle lanes.

The legal position on liability for serious accidents caused by e-scooterists needs to be made crystal clear before real harm is done. – Yours, etc,

Co Dublin.

Sir , – The Government is promising to legislate for the use of e-scooters on Irish roads (Roads Traffic Bill ).

As this legislation moves through the Dáil, I sincerely hope that an opportunity will be taken to ensure that both e-scooters and bicycles will be absolutely and definitively prohibited from being used on footpaths.

Currently pedestrians are seriously at risk from cyclists using footpaths, and e-scooters joining them will make an already dangerous situation worse. – Yours, etc,

HUGH PIERCE,
