Coveney and no-confidence vote

Sir, – It appears Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney exercised poor judgment in relation to the Katherine Zappone UN envoy role.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald attended the funeral of Bobby Storey in Belfast in apparent breach of the then Covid restriction guidelines.

Enough already; 900,000 people are on waiting lists for health services. Thousands of families and children are homeless. Perhaps our politicians who fail to demonstrate the transparency and integrity they promised, could stop wasting taxpayers’ time and money and start focusing on the very issues that we hold dear.

Sir, – Martyn Turner’s cartoon (September 11th) depicts the leader of the Opposition vainly trying to swat the “Coveney” fly in the presence of the real “elephants” like housing, Sláintecare, etc.

Surely, the real task for the Opposition is to highlight the fundamental economic and social problems facing Ireland, and propose solutions rather than pursuing an individual with a no-confidence motion in the Dáil.

It is a measure of the individual’s standing that so much Opposition effort has gone into this unimportant topic, and so little effort is going into health, housing, and climate change.
