Closing rural post offices

Sir, – An Post trivialises the impact of the post office closures by saying that, when a post office closes, no-one will be more than 15km from an alternative post office (or a 30km round trip!).

Let’s put that into a Dublin context, as this seems to be the only way to illustrate the dismissive attitude in that statement. If I was used to going to a post office in Terenure and it was on the closure list, it would be the same as assuring me that my options will not be further than Swords, Lucan, or Killiney.

Dublin, of course, is a bad example, as An Post has determined that there is not a single post office in the entire county of Dublin that is surplus to requirements! – Yours, etc,

Sir, – The chief executive of An Post claims that closure of rural post offices is not an attack on rural Ireland.

Viewed from Malin Head it looks quite the contrary and is further demonstration, if that were needed, of Dublin’s disregard for Ulster. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Of the 12 post offices that are closing in the county of Kerry it is notable that of these, nine of them are in the north of the county. One can surmise from these closures that this region has been poorly served by its public representatives both past and present and should be a wake-up call to both its electorate and wannabe members of Dáil Éireann when they come knocking next time looking for our votes. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – The announcement of post office closures is symptomatic of a country that neither understands the value of social capital nor the price of its depletion. – Yours, etc,
