Sir, – Your newspaper has drawn attention to our carbon credentials (“Republic falling short in contributions ‘to avert climate crisis’,” November 1st).  In order to address the behemoth challenge ahead in mitigating the effects of climate change it is clear leadership is required.

A first step might be to remove private vehicles from the parking area in front of Leinster House and ensuring our government buildings run at zero carbon output.

This isn’t a choice but a necessity, and would show leadership to a country turning towards a less polluting future.

Sir, – With shortages of energy supplies, the associated rising costs and the unfortunate return to fossil fuels to meet demands, are we going to see the needless waste of electricity that’s involved in the excessive lighting and decorating of gardens at Christmas?
