A chara, – John McKeown (Letters, December 3rd) bemoans the use of Xmas (instead of Christmas); it annoys me, too. However, I might remark that “Xmas” is a good indication of how much this particular religious festival has been commercialised, to the detriment of its original purpose.
Mr McKeown might derive some solace from the fact that the X of Xmas is not a sign of deletion, but a nod to the first letter of Christ’s name in Greek, as seen in the Chi-Rho symbol.
