Sir, – It's worth pointing out that not all homes in the Republic of Ireland require incomes of just under €80,000 ("First-time buyers need incomes of almost ¤80,000, banking body says", News, May 24th).
For example, a four bedroom, four bathroom, detached house in a lovely rural village in Co Sligo was bought for €185,000 recently.
Assuming a 10 per cent deposit, and applying the Central Bank guide of mortgage of 3½ times income, the buyer would only need an income of about €47,000, or less, if you have saved a bigger deposit.
So it depends on where you want to live: in an overcrowded city or a peaceful village. – Yours, etc,
