Brexit and a ‘new Europe’

Sir, – History will probably be kind to David Cameron. The problem with Brexit is not the result but unfortunately the question that was asked and the corresponding narrow-minded interpretation of the result.

There is only one clear conclusion from the Brexit result, which is that the majority of the UK population does not want Europe in its current guise.

If Europe can not see this clear message and adjust accordingly, it will be responsible for its own implosion.

History will be unkind to those in charge who don’t show real leadership and common sense at this time and focus on what is wrong with the current European model, as opposed to blaming a nation and its democratic process that was asked too narrow a question.

The European model, while well-intended, has lost its way and needs to take a long, hard look in the mirror and renew its marriage vows on what it can agree on for the good of all its members.

David Cameron’s Brexit can be a positive wake-up call for all involved that will lead to a strengthened “new Europe” for years to come. – Yours, etc,
