Bathing water quality

Sir, – Kevin O'Sullivan refers to the recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) evaluation of Irish bathing waters ("Bathing water quality improving in Ireland but swimming areas need better protection", News, May 13th).

The EPA is celebrating the fact that 97 per cent of Irish bathing waters meet the “minimum” standard.

I’ve never been satisfied with reaching the minimum standard in anything in life and this has served me well over the years.

On that basis I’d encourage all parties responsible for the quality of bathing waters in Ireland to show a bit more ambition. – Yours, etc,

The EPA attributes the improvement to better management of bathing waters and investment in treatment of urban waste water.

It is good to see the much maligned Irish Water getting some credit. This body has enough naysayers. – Yours, etc,
