Bank holidays – give me a break

Sir, – Not everyone is as enthusiastic for bank holidays as John Geraghty (Letters, July 15th).

I run a very small business, and each bank holiday is an overhead. All my clients are closed. Most suppliers are also uncontactable, as are Revenue helplines, etc.

Moreover, many people use summer bank holidays in particular for a short staycation or break. So congestion is heavily concentrated over three specific weekends in May, June and August rather than being evenly spread over the summer.

A bank holiday in September, immediately after the schools return, would be unwise.

Rather than inventing a new bank holiday, we should abolish the existing May, June and August ones and grant every worker in the country an extra four days of discretionary leave. – Yours, etc,
