Bangers forever

Sir, – I was auditor in London to an auctioneer which specialised in the intriguing combination of second-hand cars and greyhounds. The trick was to ensure one’s audit coincided with an auction, particularly to watch the current greyhound owners surreptitiously pushing their animals up the ramp to the viewing platform. Many of the cars offered for sale in the programme were assigned the abbreviation TTS, which the auctioneer informed me was short for “towed to sale”. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – When buying my first car back in 1980, I was keen to get a Toyota, mainly because of their sponsorship of the Irish Youth Orchestra. I sought the opinion of a second-hand car salesman on the Toyota brand.

“Well, like any car they have pros and cons,” he advised.

I asked what the pros were. “They last forever,” came the reply.

“And the cons?”, I asked. “They last forever.” – Yours, etc,
