Anthems, sport and politics

Sir, – Why all the fuss about American NFL players “disrespecting” their national anthem? When will Donald Trump realise that their protest is about him and his inflammatory rants? Why the American anthem has to be bawled out by some out-of-tune pop singer at baseball and football matches is, in itself, a reason to protest. The national anthem at sporting occasions should be confined to international events. GAA administrators, please note. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – In civics class (Junior Certificate 1974, Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh, Cork) I was taught to stand up straight as was possible, arms by my side, with no head covering, and to face the flag for the playing of the national anthem at sporting fixtures. I regret to notice that this does not usually happen. I believe out national anthem deserves more respect. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – People go to sporting events to see teams or individuals perform, not to watch a political or religious demonstration. – Yours, etc,
