Ageist reporting?

Sir, – I feel I am not alone in viewing as quite objectionable the habit of journalists, in reporting on an incident involving a person over the age of 60, to describe that person as “an elderly person of [age]”.

The same reporters refer to a person of 50 as being 50 years old but do not tag the person as “middle-aged”. Could this be because they may well be approaching this age themselves or are they, as I suspect, quite ageist towards people of my age group? – Yours, etc,
