Sir, – In postponing Brexit, would November 5th – Guy Fawkes Day – not have been a more appropriate exit date than Halloween?
On the other hand, I suppose the prospect of Brexit at Halloween will enable Theresa May to put a very clear proposition before the Westminster parliament for another meaningful vote: trick or treat? – Yours, etc,
FELIX M LARKIN,
Cabinteely, Dublin 18.
Sir, – When the history books are written about what looks increasingly like the imminent defeat of Brexit, one of its greatest heroes must surely be Ian Blackford MP.
From his regular position on the opposition front benches the SNP leader has risen with unfailing energy, and a dogged tenacity reminiscent of Charles Stewart Parnell, to castigate both the UK government and the Labour opposition over their handing of the Brexit fiasco.
His searing, incisive rhetoric has literally wiped the smile of the UK prime minister’s face, and recently she was seen dashing for the exit as he rose to speak. His repeated pronouncements that the only way to resolve the deadlock is to hold a second referendum must now be taken seriously. – Yours, etc,
DAMIAN HUGH O’NEILL,
London, England.
Sir, – Given that the Westminster government and “mother of parliaments” are both struggling badly in this cautionary tale for the ages perhaps it’s time to recognise the situation as a severe case of nation state cognitive dissonance and let the behavioural psychologists have a go. – Yours, etc,
JOHN HOULIHAN,
Midleton, Co Cork.
Sir, – Theresa May’s mixture for Halloween (with apologies to Shakespeare): “Double double toil and trouble Boris burn and cauldron bubble, fillet of a Rees-Mogg snake in the cauldron boil and bake” .
Trick and treat don’t answer the door. – Yours, etc,
DAVID MURNANE,
Dunshaughlin, Co Meath.
Sir, – It appears that the UK now has until the end of October to secure a deal to exit the EU. As Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to remain, with apologies to the Welsh, this is an English exit. My soccer-supporting friends tell me that England does not have a great record on “extra time” and an even worse one when it comes to the inevitable “penalties”. – Yours, etc,
PETER FELLOWS-McCULLY,
Churchtown, Dublin 14.
Sir, – Will an extension to October 31st allowing a Halloween Brexit keep the electorate in the UK from going nuts in the meantime? – Yours, etc,
PADDY DYAR,
Swinford, Co Mayo.
Sir, – An EU Brexit extension to Halloween for the UK.
Will this be the War of the Roses over again? Only this time it won’t be roses. – Yours, etc,
DAVID LYONS,
Dublin 8.
Sir, – The media has quoted Angela Merkel’s remarks during her recent visit to Dublin, namely, “Where there’s a will there’s a way ”.
Are we sure she didn’t say “Where Theresa will Theresa May”? – Yours, etc,
G WALSH,
Foxrock, Dublin 18.
