A fare exchange on the Luas

Sir, – After four years and a cost of €400 million, the Luas Cross City project nears completion. It has indeed made for a cross city, cross at the dirt, noise, delays, diversions and disruption caused to its citizens and visitors as the project has proceed laboriously towards a conclusion.

That said, there is no progress without sacrifice, and the result will be a much- improved public transport infrastructure of value to the city long into the future.

It seems appropriate, therefore, that the Luas should consider giving something back to the city and its citizens by way of recognition for the disruption the project has caused.

I believe that Luas should offer a “free family weekend” whereby the entire Luas network is operated without charge for two days.

This would have the benefits of giving the travelling public an opportunity to become familiar with the new system and its enhanced travel possibilities as well as a way of saying “thank you” on behalf of the system for the patience exhibited by the city during the construction of the new lines and links.

So, Luas, time for a speedy response. – Yours, etc,
