A divided island

Sir, – The fascinating article on the new National Museum of Ireland's Down to Earth exhibition illuminates the fact that the island is split geologically from Louth to the Shannon Estuary, with the northwest half being part of the North America continent and the southeast half belonging to the south of Europe ("1.7 billion years in the making: new exhibition examines the ground beneath our feet", News, September 28th).

That might explain the country and western music scene to the northwest and the fake tan predominant in the southeast.

It is not our fault.
