Sir, – The call by the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) for the resignation of Larry Murrin as chair of Bord Bia because his company used imported chicken in a restaurant, as reported in Conor Pope’s article (“Bord Bia chairman faces fresh criticism over imported chicken at Dublin restaurant he part-owns”, September 26th), is grossly hypocritical.
A significant amount of the grain for cattle feed, to support the current unsustainable Irish production levels of milk and beef, is imported. Why don’t our beef and dairy farmers use Irish grain?
Maybe Francie Gorman should also resign as president of the IFA.
Irish farmers do not feed the nation. We currently import 80 per cent of our food needs.

At the same time, Lough Derg, Lough Neagh and Lady’s Island Lake are poisonous, primarily from excess agricultural nutrient run-off.
Maybe that should also be grounds for resignation. – Yours, etc,
