Sir, - Like Brian McMahon (letters August 29th), I have been commuting by bike to school and work for many years - in fact nearly 50 years. Unlike him, I truly welcome the improved cycling infrastructure that has made cycling in the city and suburbs much safer and more pleasant than it would otherwise be.
If he wishes to use the roads rather than the cycle lanes, he is, of course, welcome to do so but he should not assume that all cyclists feel as he does about cycle lanes.
I am sure, however, that we can both agree that the main thing which has made cycling less safe and pleasant over our cycling lifetimes has been the increased volume of traffic and size of cars. - Yours, etc.
ANNE DOHERTY,
