Hitchhiker tales: A robber with a conscience

Driver who stole money travelled back to return it

Sir, – My older sister and a pal set off one summer as students from Dublin to hitchhike around Europe in the 1970s.

My mum gave them Holy Water to keep them safe. The pal’s mother gave them black pepper, which I understand might have come in handy.

And on one of their hitchhiking journeys through Europe, their money was robbed by their driver, who seemingly was subsequently overcome with a conscience and travelled back to return their money to them.

Both came home safe and sound with many a tale of their adventures. – Yours, etc,

MONICA McMAHON,

Malahide,

Co Dublin.
