Sir, – Sinéad O’Sullivan (Opinion, August 3rd) suggests the delayed National Children’s Hospital means Ireland shouldn’t even try to build a nuclear plant. This is an argument against building anything. One could argue, also illogically, that we can’t build wind turbines if the children’s hospital is delayed.
Every major project Ireland has ever built has been delayed, but this was never a reason to stop developing important projects. Moneypoint coal-power station was years late. The Celtic Interconnector to France is currently delayed.
Who today remembers that the M50 and the Luas were hugely delayed? These very letters pages were full of condemnation and complaints about those projects at the time. Once they opened and people started using them, they forgot they ever worried. It will be the same with the children’s hospital and it would be the same with a nuclear plant. – Yours, etc,
