Sir, – Seán O’Brien correctly notes (“On finding housing crisis solutions,” Letters, May 25th) that the State built housing on a large scale during the 1930s. Between 1932 and 1942 the number of homes built was 82,000.
It’s also worth noting that Ireland is in the midst of large-scale home construction – from 2015 to 2025 there were 250,000 homes built in the State.
This is a greater level of construction than the 1930s in both absolute and per-capita terms.
Indeed, 10 per cent of all homes in the country were built in the last 10 years. The housing need is greater still, but we shouldn’t forget that progress is being made. – Yours, etc,
