The Liffey was never for public consumption

Sir, - Having lived in Dublin in the 1980s, I feel Denis Kenny (“Drinking from the Liffey”, Letters, May 5th) must have the constitution of an ox or the benefit of rose-tinted glasses – or perhaps both.

Bagatelle’s iconic song Summer in Dublin was a big hit back then. So catchy was the tune and the opening lyric of the chorus that I could still sing it today.

“I remember that summer in Dublin/And the Liffey as it stank like hell . . .” – Yours, etc,
