Construction of Galway Cathedral

The role of north Clare in helping raise funds to build the cathedral should not be forgotten

Letters to the Editor. Illustration: Paul Scott

Sir, – Ray Burke’s informative article on the financing of Galway Cathedral by various people and organisations both in Ireland and abroad is interesting (An Irish Diary, May 5th).

He fails to mention that the diocese of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora, in which every household had to pay a levy of two shillings and sixpence a week for six years, also includes the northern portion of Co Clare. This diocese raised the largest contribution, £204,606. Perhaps consideration to a new name may be relevant: the Galway-Clare Cathedral. – Yours, etc,

FRANK FOLAN

Ballyvaughan,

Co Clare.
