Underfunding in education

Minister might well reflect on fact that virtually every household in the country will be ‘not adequately funded’ this year due to energy costs

Letters to the Editor. Illustration: Paul Scott

Sir, – The Minister for Education, Hildegarde Naughton, in seeking to justify yet another budget overrun in her department argues that the department is “not adequately funded” (“Minister for Education defends projected department overspend of up to €700m”, March 27th).

She might well reflect on the fact that virtually every household in the country will be “not adequately funded” this year due to energy costs. The bulk of households will, however, deal with their underfunding by reducing expenditure to match income. The Minister would do well to follow the lead of households. – Yours, etc,

DAVID FITZGERALD,
