A 7.1-magnitude earthquake has hit southern Peru, the US Geological Survey has reported.

The quake's epicentre was 25km north-northeast of town of Azángaro near Lake Titicaca, and it had a depth of about 258km. It was felt in neighbouring Brazil, Bolivia and Chile. The earthquake struck at 3.50am local time (8.50am Irish time).

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected.
