The bad weather is set to get worse over the weekend with snow of up to 10cm expected to fall in parts of Leinster and Munster.
Met Éireann has issued a further severe weather alert warning of “bitterly cold, icy conditions” countrywide with freezing fog becoming widespread tonight and hail and snow in eastern counties tomorrow.
In Leinster tonight will be dry and calm but exceptionally cold with a widespread severe frost and a few patches of freezing fog will form in places. Highest temperatures will range from -2 degrees along the coast to -11 at places further inland.
Tomorrow will be very cold again with frost and persisting fog in some places. It will continue mostly dry with bright and sunny spells. Top temperatures will range from -2 degrees to +2 with light easterly breezes increasing a little as the day goes on. During the night it will be dry and very cold with severe frost and ice.
Sunday will be cold and mostly cloudy, with occasional sleet and snow showers leading to accumulation in places. Met Éireann has warned drifting is possible in places due to the easterly wind. Monday will be a mostly cloudy day but very cold again.
In Connacht tonight, it will be mostly dry and calm but very cold with widespread severe frost and patches of freezing fog. Lowest temperatures will range from -5 degrees to -10.
Tomorrow will continue very cold with frost and fog persisting in some places. It will continue dry with bright or sunny spells and top temperatures will range from -2 degrees to +2.
A light easterly breeze will increase throughout the day and tomorrow night will be extremely cold with very severe frost and ice.
Sunday will be bright and dry but very cold with a raw easterly wind. Temperatures will struggle to reach zero degrees. Another hard frost will set in during Sunday night, and strengthening easterly winds will bring snow by Monday morning. Monday will be mostly cloudy but very cold with showers of sleet and snow and a strong easterly wind.
In Munster tonight will be dry but exceptionally cold with a very severe frost. A few patches of freezing fog will form in places and temperatures will range from -5 degrees to as low as -10 in places.
Tomorrow will be a dry and bright day but very cold again with frost and freezing fog persisting all day in places. Light easterly breezes will increase throughout the afternoon. A few snow showers will fall near coastal areas tomorrow night - but otherwise dry and very cold with severe frost and ice.
Sunday will be cold and mostly cloudy, with occasional sleet and snow showers giving accumulation in places. Monday will be very cold again and it will be mostly cloudy day with frequent showers of sleet and snow and a strong easterly wind, again drifting is possible.
Ulster will be most dry and calm tonight but exceptionally cold. There will be a widespread severe frost and a patches of freezing fog will form. Lowest temperatures will range from -5 degrees to as low as -10 in places.
Tomorrow will be very cold again with frost and persisting fog lasting all day. It will continue dry with bright or sunny spells and top temperatures will range from -2 degrees to +2. Tomorrow night will be dry but extremely cold with a severe frost and ice.
