Warden scalded in assault by prisoner

A prison officer was attacked and scalded with boiling water by an 18-year-old inmate at Wheatfield Prison, Dublin, today.

A prison officer was attacked and scalded with boiling water by an 18-year-old inmate at Wheatfield Prison, Dublin, today.

The officer was brought to St James’s Hospital in Dublin where he is being treated for third degree burns.

The incident happened when the prisoner threw a jug of boiling water over the officer after being given permission to make a cup of tea.

The inmate had recently transferred to Wheatfield from St Patrick's Hospital, Dublin following an attack on a staff member there.

He is due to be released in September following the completion of a six-month sentence.
