Two hikers were being treated in Beaumont Hospital in Dublin last night for serious injuries suffered in a fall at Powerscourt waterfall in Co Wicklow.

The man and a woman were airlifted from the scene by the Irish Coast Guard helicopter, and taken to Dublin Airport, where two ambulances were on stand-by to transfer them to Beaumont.

Rescue workers said the two suffered serious head injuries having apparently fallen part of the full height of the waterfall which measures 120 metres. The man also suffered serious injuries to his back and leg. Bray gardaí are investigating.

A spokeswoman for Beaumont Hospital, where national head injury specialists are based, confirmed last night that the hikers had been admitted to casualty and both were in a critical condition.

The helicopter was called out to several other accidents during the weekend, many of them involving hill-walkers and hikers.

Yesterday evening a man was airlifted from Glendalough with a fractured leg suffered in a fall, while on Saturday a woman in her 50s was rescued from Glenmacnas, Co Wicklow, also having suffered a leg fracture.
