With eight candidates in the field, the Workers' Party has a campaign-experienced team. It rates its best hope of a Dáil seat in Waterford, with Cllr John Halligan (44). He is a major campaigner for the provision of a radiotherapy unit for cancer patients at Waterford Regional Hospital.

Ted Tynan (58) is the candidate in Cork North Central. He is a long-time campaigner against water charges and is actively involved in the campaign to restore public access to the Old Head of Kinsale.

The party's youngest candidate is Andrew McGuinness (31). He is standing in Dublin Mid West. A construction worker employed in a health and safety training unit, he is campaigning for better conditions for building workers.

Sean O'Cionnaith is a candidate in Dublin North West. A veteran community and political activist in Ballymun, he is a member of its drugs taskforce and secretary of the housing taskforce.

Linda Kavanagh is one of two party candidates in Dublin South Central. A community development worker in Ballyfermot, she has campaigned for additional housing there and against bin charges. The second candidate is Shay Kelly, from Crumlin, who works in Dublin City Council's waterworks department. She is in SIPTU and an opponent of bin charges.

Tom Crilly (45) is contesting Dublin South East. An Eircom worker and CWU member, he campaigs for the rights of tenants in private rented accommodation.

Peter Short is standing in Louth. He is active in the campaign to prevent the construction of an incinerator in the Dundalk area.
