Racing: Tony Sweeney, one of Ireland’s best known racing journalists, and acclaimed historian of Irish racing, has died

Racing:Tony Sweeney, one of Ireland's best known racing journalists, and acclaimed historian of Irish racing, has died. He was eighty one. Sweeney suffered a heart-attack in Dublin two weeks ago and passed away last night in St James's Hospital.

His work for the Irish Times had been a popular feature of this organisation’s racing pages since 1998. Before that he spent over forty years as racing correspondent of the Daily Mirror. He was also a popular figure on RTE television from 1964 to 1998.
