Commuters on the M50 and N11 south of Dublin experienced delays of up to four hours yesterday evening due to emergency water works and are likely to experience the same delays again today.

Traffic was down to one lane on the N11 at Silverbridge, outside Bray, because of the works and the knock-on effect meant that traffic was backed up all along the N11 southbound, and cars merging on to it from the M50 also experienced a back-up. Frustrated drivers sat it out on the M50 southbound, taking up to four hours to reach their destination. At 9pm last night traffic was backed up to Sandyford.

On the N11 at 9pm it was backed up to Wyattville. According to AA Roadwatch, there were also serious delays reported on the Glenamuck Road, Carrickmines, and on the Ferndale Road as drivers tried to avoid the other routes.

Similar delays are expected on the same roads this evening as the emergency waterworks will not be completed until 7pm.

Meanwhile, commuters at Pearse Station on Westland Row were temporarily locked out when a Dart from Howth to Bray experienced technical difficulties. The train pulled in at the station shortly after 6pm and had to be emptied of passengers.
