These fatalities have brought the total number of road deaths in the Republic this year to 130.

However, this figure is still below the number of road deaths for the same period last year.

Road Safety Authority chief executive Noel Brett said the recent cluster of deaths was tragic, but there was still a reduction on last year's figures.

"Last year, we had the second-lowest level of road deaths in 41 years and this year's figures are 24 fewer than at the same time last year," he said.

In the North, a teenager who died was named as Callum McComskey who would have celebrated his 18th birthday next month. He crashed off the Ballyvalley Road near Mayobridge, Co Down in the early hours of Saturday morning and hit a tree.
